On the basis of the theory of normative power, E.Pavlova analyzes specifics of the formation of the modern discourse of the European identity, where the classic image of “the other” has been gradually acquiring new features. By the example of the Spanish party “Podemos”, the article shows how the application of special schemes to overcome the “otherness”, which are inherent in the mechanism of normative power, makes it possible to simultaneously support two seemingly opposing regulatory blocks, the EU and Venezuela. The theoretical part of the article is based on the research studies devoted to the issue of the European identity, above all within the conception of normative power of Europe. The empirical part of the article presents discourse analysis of the key publications and statements made by the leaders of the “Podemos”.
